Greetings readers! We had a wonderful Book Wrap for Chains last week. We discussed the book, did a scavenger hunt, and saw Thomas Jefferson’s handwriting up close. It was pretty cool! Now it’s time to announce our August book.
Drum roll please…. it’s Harlem Summer by Walter Dean Myers. This is a great book for all our historians, but especially our older ones. Have you ever wanted to have a relaxing summer but it didn’t quite turn out that way? Well, your summer probably didn’t get as crazy as 16 year old Mark Purvis’ in this “humorous coming-of-age story” that “ reflects the paradoxically playful yet dangerous atmosphere of the 1920s” (Publisher’s Weekly). Mark just wants to have fun, but he finds himself torn between the “new negroes” at the Crisis magazine office and the shadowy underworld of bootlegging.
Now get ready for this, historians: Mr. Myers is coming to our Book Wrap on August 29th from 4:30 to 6 PM! He will answer your questions, read an excerpt from the book and hang out with us as we see artifacts from the New-York Historical Society collection. Read away and start thinking of what you want to ask the author!
