Anyone else having ups and downs as we navigate the emotions of today’s world? Now more than ever, we all have our bad-seed days and it’s so important to remember to dig deep and be kind. In Little New-Yorkers this week, meet a seed with a bad temper, bad manners, and a bad attitude who tries to find out why he feels and acts so bad. Then, make a mix-and-match flip book showing the range of emotions that everyone can feel, from bad to mad, and sometimes even glad!
Follow along with this post to create with us at home and don’t forget to join us LIVE online every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm, where we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a story book, all from the comfort of our living rooms. This week, we’re reading the book The Bad Seed by Jory John, illustrated by Pete Oswald.
How are you feeling out there, Little New Yorkers? Come create with us and explore the hilarious tale The Bad Seed through art-making and play.
- Paper or cardstock to print out the flip book pages click here
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Scissors (with grownup assistance as needed!)
- Stapler or tape
*Note: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home. And if your final product looks different than what you see here—that’s wonderful! As long as you’re flexing your artistic muscles and enjoying what you’re making, you’re doing it right.
STEP 1: Color in your seeds’ feeling faces
Talk with your grownup about how each seed might feel. What colors will you add to show their feelings? Add patterns, shapes, and any kinds of colors you want!
STEP 2: Staple pages together
Once you’ve finished coloring in all your seeds, attach the three sheets together along the left side long edge to create a booklet. We used a stapler, but feel free to use whatever materials you have. Make sure to get a grownup’s help with the stapler if you’re using one!
STEP 3: Cut along the lines
Once the pages are attached together, follow the scissors and cut along the lines to divide the seeds into three pieces. This will allow you to mix up and mash up your different seeds and create your own combinations of feelings! Make sure you follow the line and stop before you cut through the other side.
STEP 4: Finishing Touches
You’re almost finished! Start testing out all the different wacky combinations you can make!
At this point, to help keep everything together, we stapled an additional blank page at the back of our booklet and added a cover!
Voila! You now have your very own bad seed flipbook!
To add to your flipbook, you can trace the outline of your seed, divide it into thirds, and create your own features (eyebrows, eyes, mouth). Practice making different feeling faces into a mirror and observe how they change. The possibilities are endless!
We hope you enjoy this activity! Share your creations in the comments section below.
