Little New Yorkers @ Home: Decorate a Portrait of Planet Earth
Celebrate our life-giving, spectacular, awe-inspiring planet Earth. This week, we’re reading My Friend Earth by Patricia MacLachlan and illustrated by Francesca Sanna, and learning all about the wonderful things our friend Earth does for us. What do you love most about planet Earth? It has so much to offer from panda bears to sunsets to the fruits and veggies that make our bodies strong!
Celebrate Earth in a different way by creating our own beautiful portraits and decorating them with some of Earth’s treasures.
Follow along with this post to create with us at home and don’t forget to join us LIVE online every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm, where we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a story book, all from the comfort of our living rooms.
- Paper or cardstock to print out the Earth character coloring sheet and special items to decorate.
- Click here for the My Friend Earth templates (Template 1) (Template 2)
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Tape, glue, gluestick, stapler–any kind of attachment will do!
*A note on supplies: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home! And if your final product looks different than what you see here–that’s wonderful!
STEP 1: Color in the portrait of our friend Earth as well as her treasures
Make it your own! You can use colors like the ones you see in the book or choose wild colors that celebrate the colorful rainbow of Earth’s bounty. We chose a leafy green for skin and an ocean blue for hair.
STEP 2: Cut out treasures
Look at all the wonderful things Earth has to offer us like blue mushrooms, pink turtles, and smiling clouds
STEP 3: Decorate!
Use the beautiful objects you colored in to decorate your portrait of Earth. As a bonus, pose with your picture to show that Earth just how much she means to you!
What are some other ways you can celebrate our planet? How can you show respect and care to all its living things? We encourage you to brainstorm as a family ways you can help take care of our friend Earth. Whether that’s learning more about the flora and fauna native to your neighborhood, composting your food waste, or making sure you recycle, there are ways that we all can make a difference.
We hope you enjoy this activity!
