Welcome back, Little New-Yorkers! This week we’re thinking about names; how we got our names, what they mean to us, and how we can celebrate these important parts of what makes us, us! We’ll be reading Alma and How She Got Her Name, written and illustrated by Juana Martinez-Neal. Alma feels she has too many names—she has six! How many names do you have? Find out how she feels after learning the history of each special name. Then, decorate your name to hang in your house and talk about why it’s special, too.
Speaking of names: ever wondered why our name includes a hyphen between the “New” and “York”? Click here to learn more about this historic spelling of New York and the name of the New-York Historical Society!
Follow along with this post to create with us at home and don’t forget to join us live every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm where we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a storybook, all from the comfort of your living room.
- Printed name badge template (Print Template)
- Something to draw with: colored pencils, markers, crayons
*A note on supplies: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home. And if your final product looks different than what you see here, that’s wonderful!
STEP 1: Decorate
Choose one or all of the name badges and decorate with coloring materials, glitter, stickers—whatever you have to make it feel special. Talk with your grownups about your name and their names. Learn more about what you call each other and why!
STEP 2: Cut out
Using scissors, carefully cut around the outside of your badge.
STEP 3: Display!
Yay! You’ve finished your first name badge! How do you want to display it? Use tape or a safety pin to proudly stick it on your clothing or favorite hat! Punch a hole and use string to wear it as a necklace or hang it from your ceiling.
STEP 4: Repeat!
Complete as many of the name badges as you’d like! Share them with your friends and family to celebrate all the beauty and history in their names. String them all together in a name garland to hang up in your home! It’s up to you!
We hope you enjoy this activity! Share your creations in the comments below and during our online sessions of Little New Yorkers @ Home Tuesdays and Fridays at 3:30 pm. See you then!
