Hello again, Little New-Yorkers! This week, we’re reading Frankie’s Favorite Food by Kelsey Garrity-Riley. A book about Frankie, a little boy who has so many favorite foods, he can’t choose just one to be in his school play. Anyone else out there have too many favorites to count? Food nourishes our bodies, puts smiles on our faces, creates community, and can connect us to cultures and people all over the world. Join us this week to celebrate some of Frankie’s favorites and create your own delicious food-inspired finger puppets!
Follow along with this post to create with us at home and don’t forget to join us live every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm where we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a storybook, all from the comfort of your living room.
Supplies*
- Printed puppets template (Print Template)
- Glue stick or tape
- Scissors
- Something to draw with: colored pencils, markers, crayons
*A note on supplies: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home. And if your final product looks different than what you see here, that’s wonderful!
STEP 1: Color in your food finger puppets
Using whatever coloring materials you have, add color and flair to your foodie finger puppets. Imagine what flavors and textures your characters take on with each color!
STEP 2: Cut out finger puppets
Carefully cut out your finger puppets along the edges. Make sure to cut around the strip at the bottom as that will be your puppet’s support.
STEP 3: Tape the two ends to create a loop for your finger
Attach the two ends of the strip to make a loop for your finger to fit through. You can use tape, glue, or whatever you have for an attachment.
STEP 4: Party!
Put on a show! Make your puppets move and groove to the sound of your favorite music! What might your candy puppet say to the grapes? It’s up to you!
If you’re feeling inspired, create your own finger puppets based on your favorite foods—just make sure to include the strip at the bottom, and you’re ready to go!
We hope you enjoy this activity! Share your creations in the comments below and during our online sessions of Little New Yorkers @ Home Tuesdays and Fridays at 3:30 pm. See you then!
