Hello Little New-Yorkers! Follow along with this post to create your very own forest friends play scene, and don’t forget to join us live every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm when we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a storybook — all from the comfort of your home!
This March we are celebrating Women’s History Month by featuring stories of bold and brilliant women of the past and present who refused to be silenced. Learn their stories of perseverance and connect to their spirit of benevolence.
This week, we are inspired by the book Greta and the Giants written by Zoë Tucker and illustrated by Zoe Persico. This book is inspired by the story of Greta Thunberg, a young woman from Sweden who faced down the “giants” of the world by taking a stand against climate change. Today you can create your own forest scene to celebrate the beautiful natural world and put yourself and your new animal friends in it to play!
Download and print forest scene and forest friends templates.
- Something to color with: markers, pastels, colored pencils, crayons or a combination!
- Tape or glue (optional)
* A note on supplies: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home. And if your final product looks different than what you see here, that’s wonderful!
STEP 1: Color the Forest Scene Template
To start, use markers, colored pencils, or crayons to color in your forest scene. Decide on what the weather is like in your forest, and what season it is. Is it a sunny spring day with lots of flowers blooming? Or is it a crisp fall day with lots of colorful, crunchy leaves on the ground? Use your imagination and add whatever details you love most about nature!
STEP 2: Color the Forest Friends Template
Now that you’ve created your forest, it is time to color yourself and all of your animal friends who will enjoy it! Use markers, colored pencils, or crayons to color all of the animal friends. If you have a favorite animal that isn’t there, feel free to draw one of your own! Then, add hair, a hat, or other features to the person in the template to turn them into you! How would you like to dress to play with all of your new friends in the forest?
STEP 3: Cut Out Your Forest Friends
Now it is time to cut out your forest friends! Carefully cut along the thick black lines around each person and animal (be sure to only cut the outside edges). When you are finished you should have 7 pieces, plus your forest scene background.
STEP 4: Create Your Forest Scene
Now you have two options. If you want to create a permanent picture, then using glue or tape, attach your forest friends to the forest scene background. (If you’re using glue, make sure to hold your pieces down and count to 10 so they stick!) If you want to be able to move your friends around the scene, then leave them unstuck. You can even add straws or popsicle sticks to the backs of your pieces to create puppets for your scene!
STEP 5: Tell Your Own Forest Story!
Now tell a story about you and your new forest friends! What adventures will you go on together in the forest? Will you hike and enjoy the beauty? Or will you fight to save your home like Greta did?
Thanks for following along. We hope to see you at Little New-Yorkers each Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm!
