Hello Little New-Yorkers! Follow along with this post to create your very own Pride flag collage and don’t forget to join us live every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm when we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a storybook — all from the comfort of your home!
June is Pride Month and we will be celebrating the vibrancy of the LGBTQ+ community with some of our favorite books!
This week, we are inspired by the book Red: A Crayon’s Story written and illustrated by Michael Hall. This book tells the story of a blue crayon that was mistakenly labeled as red, and encourages us all to be true to our inner selves and accept others’ inner selves as well. In that spirit, today you can create your own Pride flag collage to wave and show your support for Pride month!
Download and print the flag template.
- Collage materials in any combination of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Look for whatever you have around the house, and be creative! Construction paper, tissue paper, cut up old magazines, sequins, jewels, and glitter are all some great options. The more different things you have, the more vibrant your collage will be!
- Glue and/or tape
- A pen, stick, or straw, to use as a flag support.
* A note on supplies: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home. And if your final product looks different than what you see here, that’s wonderful!
STEP 1: Create Your Colorful Collage Pieces
To start, cut, tear, and fold your paper collage materials into any shapes you like. Hearts are of course perfect for pride month, but maybe you want to include stars, or diamonds, or flowers? You can also find any other materials around the house you’d like to include, such as glitter, sequins, jewels, or anything else you can think of. We’re celebrating vibrancy, so the more shapes and colors you include the better! Go wild and be creative! When you have finished, separate your shapes into piles of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple.
STEP 2: Attach Your Collage Pieces to the Flag Template
Using glue, tape, staples, or a combination, attach your collage materials to the flag template. (If you’re using glue, make sure you hold the pieces down and count to 10 to make sure they stick!) Use one row on the flag for each of the color piles you created in the last step. Leave the “cut” tabs on the side uncovered. The Pride flag goes in the color of the rainbow, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple!
Have fun with the way you attach the pieces. Some pieces can be folded, some pieces can be sticking up, the colors can overlap, and pieces can hang off the edges of the flag. The only rule is to be creative and true to yourself!
STEP 3: Cut Out the Side Tabs
Using scissors, carefully cut along the black lines to cut off the tab that says “cut” as well as the two smaller “c” tabs on the side of the flag.
When you are done, you will still have two blank tabs attached to the side of your flag.
STEP 4: Attach Your Flag to Your Flag Pole
Now use tape or glue to attach those two remaining tabs to your stick, pencil, or straw. This will be your flag pole to wave your flag around, so make sure it is strong enough to support your flag and well attached!
STEP 5: Wave Your Flag and Celebrate!
Now you’re ready to wave your flag to show everyone that you’re proud of who you are and you want them to be proud of who they are too! Show everyone your true colors!
