Hello Little New-Yorkers! Follow along with this post to create your very own sea creature necklace, and don’t forget to join us live every Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm when we sing a special Little New-Yorkers hello song, do silly stretches and exercises, and read a storybook — all from the comfort of your home!
June is Pride Month and we will be celebrating the vibrancy of the LGBTQ+ community with some of our favorite books!
This week, we are inspired by the book Mermaids on Parade written by Melanie Hope Greenberg. This book tells the story of one little girl’s journey to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, and all of the colorful characters she sees there. Today you can create your own sea creature necklace so you can go on parade too!
Download and print the necklace and sea creatures templates.
- Something to color with: markers, pastels, colored pencils, crayons or a combination!
- String or ribbon
- Hole punch (optional)
* A note on supplies: If you don’t have exactly the supplies listed, improvise! These projects are designed to be versatile, so feel free to use whatever materials and tools you have at home. And if your final product looks different than what you see here, that’s wonderful!
STEP 1: Color the Necklace and Sea Creature Templates
To start, use markers, colored pencils, crayons, or a combination to color your necklace template. What kind of parade will your sea creatures be going on? The ocean friends in the parade come in all colors, so go wild and use your imagination! Is your parade happening in a coral reef? Or in a deep, dark, spooky part of the sea? The choice is yours!
Now choose at least three sea creatures from the sea creature template and color them as well. You should choose at least three, but you can color as many as you like!
STEP 2: Cut Out Your Necklace Template and Sea Creatures
Now it is time to cut out your colorful pieces! Carefully cut along the thick black lines around your necklace piece (be sure to only cut the outside edges!). Then, carefully cut along the thick black lines outlining whatever sea creature friends you chose to color. Once completed, you will have one necklace piece, and as many sea creature pieces as you chose.
STEP 3: Punch Holes in All Your Pieces
Locate the two black dots on the sides of the bottom of the necklace template piece. Using your hole punch, punch a hole right on those dots. (Note: if you don’t have a hole punch, ask an adult to help you punch a hole using a pen or pair of scissors.)
Next, use your hole punch to punch holes on the necklace template piece wherever you want your sea creatures to hang from. In the example, we punched holes along the bottom edge, but you can punch your holes wherever you like! Make sure you punch one hole for each sea creature you cut out. And if you are using scissors instead of a hole punch, make sure you ask an adult for help!
Finally, punch one hole in the top of each of your sea creature pieces.
STEP 4: Tie Your Sea Creatures to Your Necklace
Now cut a length of string and tie one end to one of your sea creatures, and the other end to one of the holes in your necklace template. The strings can be any length, you decide how far you want each of your sea creatures to hang down!
STEP 5: Attach the Neck Ties to Your Necklace
Now cut two pieces of string long enough to tie around your neck. Tie one piece to the top, outside hole of your necklace template. (The ones that were marked with black dots) Tie the other piece to the hole on the opposite side.
STEP 6: Go On Parade!
Now get help tying those last pieces of string together behind your neck. Now you’ve got a sea creature necklace so you can go on parade too! Where will you and your new sea creature friends parade? Around the house? At the park? Maybe you will even make it all the way to Coney Island too!
Thanks for following along. We hope to see you at Little New-Yorkers each Tuesday and Friday at 3:30 pm!
